The 11-member grouping adopted the declaration on 12 September at the summit Narendra Modi chaired, after Iran and the UAE agreed a last-minute compromise on language about the West Asia war. It sought comprehensive UN reform, backing bigger Security Council roles for India and Brazil, urged “maximum restraint”, and criticised the U.S. blockade of Cuba.

The government told officials concerned that the map endorsed by the General Assembly under its “Correct the Map” resolution must reflect India’s position on Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The version in circulation showed Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin between claim lines rather than as Indian territory.

The UN Environment Programme, in a report released in Nairobi on 2 September, for the first time charted a detailed pathway for a world that temporarily overshoots the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 degrees Celsius goal. It warned of faster sea-level rise, coral reef collapse and food production declines of up to 14% by 2050 without adaptation.

The General Assembly on 4 September adopted a resolution encouraging governments and institutions to replace the traditional Mercator projection with the Equal Earth projection, which represents Africa and other equatorial regions at their true relative size. India voted in favour.
